I do not need him to recall previous uses of his powers, only what triggered the incident he is currently upset about. Finding a trigger will narrow down the emotion or incident that caused his power to temporarily release.
[ Vanyel could just Git Gud (tm) though. He could do that. He does notice that mental opening and slips into Vanyel's mind, to see what exactly out-of-control nonsense he's dealing with. ]
